Zentangle
Artist Statement:
For my zentangle artwork I decided to draw a dolphin swimming in the ocean with a large sun behind the dolphin. The main elements that can be found easily within my artwork are shape, line, pattern, space, and value. For instance, I mainly utilized diagonal lines, horizontal lines, and zig zags.
In order to create my zentangle, I had to gather my tools, which were a large, rectangular piece of copy paper, a ruler, a pencil, and a thin Sharpie pen. The first thing I did was draw three rectangular boxes in the middle of my copy paper with half an inch of space between each box. Once this was done, I began to draw my zentangle, which consisted of a dolphin, the sun, and the waves. Then I used the Sharpie pen to trace what I had drawn. As I traced my drawing, I added a darker value to the waves and the sun in order to make them seem more intriguing. One of the methods that greatly contributed to my finished product was the method of not erasing what I had drawn because that gave me great results.
In addition, what inspired my artwork were images that I have constantly seen of dolphins swimming in the ocean while the sun is either setting or rising because they look very majestic. Based on those images, I attempted to depict calmness and beauty in my artwork because those are the major characteristics that I believe dolphins possess or exhibit.
Also, my goal as an artist is to produce artwork that captivates the public and leaves the people intrigued by what I create because I place a great amount of effort into what I do. By creating my zentangle, I was definitely able to reach my goal because various classmates commented how great my artwork looked despite the fact that I believed it could have been better.
Overall, my thoughts on my artwork were that it resulted even better than I had hoped because when I sketched my zentangle, at first I thought it needed more details. Based on this project, I learned that it takes a while to be able to produce something worthy of being noticed because when I was in the process of sketching my zentangle, I had to create three sketches in order to make something incredible.
